PharmaSurgics’ lead product is based on a proprietary lactoferrin-derived peptide (PXL01). It represents the first pharmaceutical-based treatment for the prevention of post-surgical adhesions and is being developed as a first-line treatment to replace current barrier methods.
The pharmaceutical ingredient is formulated in a viscous, bio-adhesive gel, providing three important benefits. Firstly, the formulation ensures optimal drug release. A burst of the active drug is delivered directly after application, followed by slow release during the healing period. Secondly, the gel provides a barrier effect, enhancing the anti-adhesion effect. And thirdly, the product is easy to handle and apply.
Initially, PXL01 will target flexor tendon hand surgery. However, relatively minor product modifications will enable the development of treatments covering a broad range of surgical procedures.
